Nose Surgery
The nose is the most prominent feature of the face, and as such, its size and shape can be the focus of complaints. Patients may feel their nose is too big for their face, too wide, too fat, bent off to one side, or has a big bump. In addition to aesthetic considerations, there can be functional problems with your nose, such as airway obstruction and sinus headaches caused by a deviated septum.
These problems can be addressed with a corrective
rhinoplasty, but what can be done is limited by the patient's
bone structure, skin type, and other variables. What I do
in corrective rhinoplasty is restore the normal balance of
your nose to the rest of your facial features. During the
consultation, I ask what your concerns are and discuss what
can be realistically accomplished by reshaping your nose.
The operation is performed under local
anesthesia with intravenous sedation. It usually takes
two hours and is done through small incisions inside the nose.
Sometimes this is supplemented with a small incision across
the columella, which is the narrow bridge of skin separating
the nostrils. Nasal packing placed inside the nose after surgery
is removed in three days, and a protective external splint
is removed after one week. There is moderate postoperative
discomfort, similar to a bad cold, but no severe pain.
