Reconstructive surgery.
Whereas cosmetic surgery improves the normal, reconstructive
surgery aims to restore the abnormal to normalcy. This specialty
expanded in response to the massive facial injuries resulting
from the trench warfare of World War I. With the skills developed
from that experience, plastic surgeons turned their attention
to other parts of the body. We find ourselves called upon
by our colleagues in cardiac surgery, general surgery, neurosurgery,
orthopedics and gynecology to assist in repairing defects
from injury, cancer, or other disease processes.
• Breast reconstruction
• Gynecomastia (enlarged male breast)
• Scar revision
• Facial bone fracture surgery
• Skin and soft tissue tumor excision
• Laser treatment of hemangiomas and port wine stains
• Otoplasty for ear deformities
• Partial glossectomy for macroglossia (enlarged tongue)
• Wound healing problems
Hand surgery. It was a natural
progression for plastic surgeons to apply the meticulous techniques
of plastic surgery to hand surgery, both for repair of injuries
and for other conditions.
• Tendon and nerve injuries
• Fractures of the fingers and hand
• Carpal tunnel syndrome
• Ganglion cysts of the fingers and wrist
• Dupuytren’s contracture of the hand
